THIS IS IT! It’s your chance to nominate two incredible individuals — one who is a service member and one who is a military spouse — to be honored at the 6th annual AMPA National Gala, presented by Comcast NBCUniversal and USAA. Hundreds of LGBTQ military families and allies from across the nation and around the world will gather at the event on Saturday, May 11, in Washington, DC, to celebrate and honor our modern military families for their service and sacrifice. Two especially worthy individuals will be recognized for their leadership in the community, and we want to know who you think they should be.
The Donna Johnson Equality and Valor Award
The Donna Johnson Equality and Valor Award stands to honor the life, legacy, and bravery of Staff Sergeant Donna Johnson, who was slain in action overseas. What followed back at home also became a task of burden and woe. Tracy Johnson — Donna’s wife — was challenged to undergo the painful task of seeking to be recognized as Donna’s widow. Thanks in part to Donna’s legacy, Tracy’s courage, and the advocacy work of AMPA, the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs eventually changed their policies to recognize Tracy and the same-sex spouses of service members and veterans. These efforts also contributed to the overall fight that eventually overturned unconstitutional and discriminatory laws on marriage. The award stands to remember a pivotal event in American, LGBT, and AMPA history.
Each year, the AMPA board of directors honors a service member with the award. Service members can be nominated from any branch of service — Coast Guard included — and may be any gender, sexual orientation, or queer identity. The award will be presented to a service member whom the panel believes exemplifies courage, equality, and valor.
AMPA Military Spouse Leadership Award
AMPA will also recognize a military spouse leader with the AMPA Military Spouse Leadership Award. This military spouse embodies the spirit of community service and has a passionate, unwavering commitment to making a difference in their community. The military spouse can be from any branch of the military.
