It’s certainly been a tough year, but from fighting back against Donald Trump’s transgender military ban to launching our brand new military spouse scholarship — AMPA has been on the front lines in education, advocacy, and support for our nation’s LGBT military families and allies.
If there is one thing that has motivated us in our ongoing fight for equality, it’s been you. Your willingness to stand up against discrimination and lend your voice and your stories in the fight for fairness and equality has truly been inspiring.
Together, we’re fighting back against unprecedented attacks on our modern military families. We are proud to be an organizational plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging President Trump’s unconscionable transgender military ban. It’s a battle we’re determined to win — just like we defeated Trump’s anti-LGBTQ Army Secretary nominee and a discriminatory measure in the annual defense bill.
We also filed another joint amicus brief with the Supreme Court of the United States, highlighting the challenges our military families would face if the court grants a special license to discriminate against LGBT people in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. We know our voice was heard, because, during oral arguments, Justice Sotomayor specifically referenced the brief and the potential impact the case may have on LGBT military families stationed in remote areas.
But we want you to know we’re not only on the defense, we’re also on the offense. We worked closely with our allies to gather important data through a number of surveys on the unique challenges our LGBT military families face, and we’re lifting up the voices of our military families with LGBT kids, too. We also advised the Defense Health Board on the top three healthcare needs of LGBT military families.
We brought together hundreds of our LGBT military families and allies from across the country and around the world — honoring our heroes while celebrating our accomplishments — at the 4th annual AMPA National Gala in Washington, DC. And we helped to increase the visibility of the LGBT military community through pride month observances on U.S. military installations around the world. And to top it off, we were thrilled to announce our AMPA Military Spouse Scholarship this year and award scholarships to five incredible military spouses.
Most importantly, we continue to give our LGBT military spouses and their families a voice.
As we close out the year and look ahead, will you help us raise $2018 to start 2018? With your help, we’ll be able to continue our incredibly important mission of connecting, supporting, honoring, and serving the partners and spouses of America’s LGBT service members and veterans — our nation’s modern military families.
